Traditionally, the street was famous for its numerous tailors shops. When times were hard, the tailor's money would just about be enough to put 'rice' and 'treacle' on his table, then there would be none left. 'Popping' was the term meaning to pawn, and 'weasels' were the flat irons the tailors used.
