First, some background. Pumpkins were used in both North America and Europe as cooking vessels in conjuction with boiling stones. Before metal vessels were available or affordable, fire-heated stones were put directly in the pot, bag, or pumpkin shell to heat the contents. This is the origin of the children's story "Stone Soup." Pumpkin shells were used for making stews. (See following recipe.) And that is what 'Peter, Peter...' refers to. Canibalism by pumpkin stew. Recipe: North American Native pumpkin stew, a classic succotash. Remove the seeds and fibers and bake a pumpkin. On the stove top, brown 2 pounds of hamburger and 1 boned chicken. Add this to a stew consisting of roasted pumpkin seeds (2 cups), a can of lima or great northern beans, 2 cans of whole-kernel corn, 1 cup of currents, 1 can of chopped peaches. Season with 1 chopped serano pepper (my favorite) or chili powder, chipotle or ancho chili, and salt to taste. Fill the cooked pumpkin with the stew, reduce the oven to low heat, and let it sit for an hour before serving. Serve by scooping pumpkin out with the stew. Followups:
