I never researched this particular nursery rhyme, but it seemed obvious to me, as a child, and it conjured up horrific images when I heard it. Peter had an unfaithful wife. He chopped her up and hid her remains in a hollowed out pumpkin shell, and wasn't found out till the rats came. Of course, when I first heard this rhyme as a child, I didn't make the "unfaithful wife" connection. I remember thinking that he couldn't keep her because she kept running away. A couple of the explanations I read here seem more plausable, since the meanings of most nursury rhymes are masked by the use of metaphor. However, I've learned that many people had the same interpretation of "Peter", when they heard it as children. It's a simple matter of deduction.
