What little boys are made ofPosted by Peter Pawinski on March 28, 2001 at 07:25:51: Here's a question that's been bugging me for awhile. Perhaps someone can help. What is the original word used in the "What little boys are made of" poem in the line " XXXX and snails and puppy dog tails." I've always heard it as "snips." An early 1900s edition of the Real Mother Goose has it as "snaps." An English version from 1820 renders it as "frogs." The back of a Trivial Pursuit card has the answer as "snakes." I've also heard: ships, sticks, slugs, nails, rats, snits and worms. What does the earliest English recording of this poem have? Also, Followups:
