There was another famous nursery rhyme, "Here we go 'round the mulberry bush", which was no doubt responsible for the confusion. It is thought by some that "weasel and stoat" was rhyming slang for "coat". You could pawn your coat in the spring or summer, figuring to buy it back before it got cold again.
