I concur with Lauren who posted Oct 2, of 2001. She stated that "There was a song similar to "Ring Around the Rosies" but had nothing to do with it. The actual song is about the plage but didn't exist until much later." I have read many books on the plague and historians will tell you that the plague version of this rhyme cannot be traced back further than Victorian times. It is a macabre reworking of the orinal rhyme to reflect the horrors that disease wrought in Europe a few centuries earlier. Ring around the rosey - the red flea bite that transmitted the disease was soon accompanied by a ring (look up symptoms of lyme disease if you doubt flea bites can do this). A pocket full of posies - a handful of flowers would be kept in the pockets and held up to your face when necessary to block the stench of the dying. Also, people at this time did not know how the disease was spread and many blamed "foul vapors" for all sorts of illness. That is one of the reasons beds of the wealthy had curtains...to shield them from "night vapors."
