New Years/ Mother Goose

My family has the tradition of Mother Goose coming on New Year's Eve. She brings a little gift or two to the children. These gifts came from riding under Santa's sleigh on Christmas Eve. She keeps her apron spread wide to catch any gifts that fall from the sleigh. I would like to know if anyone has any information about the origin of this tradition or any other information about it. Thanks.
