well well, it is indeed true that what has become this children's song, was once a chant in regards to the bubonic plague.
the people who had contacted the disease were called rosies at the time. at the time, you had the person who was what is now the coroner, going around picking up dead people. posies were placed in the shirt pockets of the people who had died and were infected with the black plague to differentiate them from the ones who hadn't contaced the disease. these people with posies in their pockets were then burned, cremated.
and that is where the first few lines of the children's song originated from.
