This little pig went to market?????

Hi,

I was hoping someone would know the inspiration or historical context for this rhyme. Especially what the pigs represent or if they are truly only pigs on the way to the slaughter. If so, why would one be eating roast beef???
I have also found two versions ending in a slightly different last line, which is the original?

This little piggy went to market,
This little piggy stayed home,
This little piggy had roast beef,
This little piggy had none,

And this little piggy cried,
Wee, wee, wee, all the way home

� or �

This little pig said, "Wee, wee!
I can't find my way home."

Any thoughts or suggestions on where I can do some more research would be greatly appreciated!
