It probably meant ring around the rosaries. In the days of the bubonic plague everyone was catholic which meant they had rosaries. Perhaps the rosaries were put in the middle of the circle and the bodies of the dead were put in a circle around them. Posies in their pockets may have stemmed the smell of death.
