I have read the explanation that the rhyme was not based on the plague, however it seems odd that it should have evolved such detail ie;the rash, the posy (carried and held to the nose to ward off the infection and of which illustrations exist). I went to school very close to an old London plague pit and suppose that this version may have come to be long after the Great Plague of 1664, apparently eradicated by the Great Fire of London 1665.
