The book you want is a Rand McNally Junior Elf book, by Helen Wing, printed in 1964. I found it at a used and out-of-print book site. Hickory, dickory, dock! The mouse ran up the clock; The clock struck one, And down he run, Hickory, dickory, dock! "I'm hungry now," said Mousie, "I need a bite to eat," So he tiptoed to the kitchen To look for something sweet. He twitched his nose from left to right Until he started drooling, For over on the window sill A cherry tart was cooling. The sill was just a leap away, And quicker than a minute, Mousie landed on the tart And stuck his face right in it. The cherry juice came bubbling out And stained his fur quite pink, So Mousie had to take a shower Inside the kitchen sink. He wet his paws and wiped his jaws And cleaned his furry chin, And as he shook the water off The old gray Cat walked in. "Hi, Mousie," said the old gray Cat, "Please don't run away, You know I love you dearly And I only want to play." Mousie took a flying jump, And tried to hide himself Behind a box of crackers That was standing on the shelf. "I see your tail," the old Cat said, "It's showing at the end, So stay right there and I'll come up To visit you, my friend." Said Mousie, "You are very kind But I've been fooled before," Then he gave the cracker-box a push And knocked it to the floor. The box flew open on the way And crackers filled the air, The old Cat cried, "Meow, Meow," And dodged behind a chair. When puppy heard the Cat's meow He bounded in the room, And with his clumsy feet he hit A bucket and a broom. The bucket tumbled on its side, The broom came toppling after, While little Mousie on the shelf Was doubled up with laughter. "Hurray!" he cheered as Puppy chased The Cat around the table. They slipped and slid, and Puppy barked As loud as he was able. A chair went crashing on the floor As 'round and 'round they ran, The lid fell off the kettle And hit the frying pan. Said Mousie, "It's a circus, I never had such fun! But I hear footsteps coming So it's time for me to run." He knew the secret stairway That was just inside the wall, And through a door he disappeared, Whiskers, tail and all. He had to run a long, dark way Before he reached his house, But waiting there to meet him Were Dad and Mother Mouse. His brothers and his sisters, too, Came running in a flock To hear how Mousie fooled the Cat And how he climbed the clock. When Mousie's story ended, They clapped their paws with glee, And little Mousie danced away As gay as he could be.
